Adopt-A-Defib is committed to saving lives and making Public Access Defibrillators more readily available
In 2013 our not-for-profit initiative was founded in memory of loved ones lost to Sudden Cardiac Arrest and survivors. Every day Cardiac Arrest steals many lives of those around us. It can happen to any individual, whether you are young, old, active, or not.
Everyone should learn how to resuscitate someone as Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the most common cause of unexpected death in the western world. It strikes suddenly and without warning and more than 80% of these deaths occur in an out of hospital setting.
For the best chance of survival the casualty immediately needs to receive effective CPR and treatment with a Defibrillator.
“Where is the AED?!” During an emergency, this question can be a crucial one. With your mind racing and adrenaline pumping, it’s important to know where key items are located and stored at all times.
A Defibrillator embedded in a cabinet on the wall of your workplace, club or school can mean the difference between life and death if someone collapses unexpectedly especially in the middle of a crowd. No matter the cause of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, one thing always remains the same – what happens in the first five minutes holds the key to survival.
Don’t hide it. Sounds simple, right? It is. Yet, there are too many accounts of some organisations keeping them in locked offices or closets, behind other equipment, or even still in their original packaging.
At that moment when the AED is needed, access to it is critical. The rescuer must be able to utilise the ‘One Hand Rule.’ This is where grabbing the AED just requires one hand rather than both because of items in the way.
Have one or more visible, quickly accessible Defibrillators installed on the premises and personnel educated on the location of these Defibs to become HeartSafe with Adopt-A-Defib. Business, Clubs and Schools are awarded a HeartSafe magnet for the steel wall cabinet together with the HeartSafe social media image below.
